Although most soccer fans can’t wait to see Messi, Ronaldo, Mueller and others score lots of goals in Russia, there are a few of us who prefer defensively minded players to step up and make a lasting impact on the 2018 World Cup. One such defender with a high chance of starring in Russia is Spain’s and Real Madrid’s captain Sergio Ramos.
An extremely versatile center-back, Sergio is among the best defenders in the world when it comes to scoring. His set pieces in particular are reminiscent of legendary free-kick specialists like Ronaldinho and Beckham. And this summer we should expect a goal or two off the foot of Ramos.
As for Real Madrid, the team lost the chances to win La Liga as well as Copa del Rey relatively early in the 2017-18 season. Although Los Blancos are still fighting to win the Champions League, the work load hasn’t been much of a strain and particularly not on Ramos. We should expect him to have plenty of energy left this summer, which may not be the case with his main rivals who have been involved in ferocious battles across different tournaments.
Last but not least, Spain is currently one of the biggest favorites to win the World Cup. When they took home the title for the first time, in 2010, a major part of their success was their five clean sheets along the way. We can pretty much guarantee that Spanish manager Julen Lopetegui will do everything in his power to help Ramos & Co. replicate those statistics.
